We expand our business project in planting 300 Ha of Citronella. Citronella is one of the essential plants which is potential for agro-industrial export commodities. World export-import statistics show that consumption of essential oils and their derivatives has increased around 10% from year to year. The increasing number of it is mainly gained from the growing demand for the food flavoring industry, cosmetics and fragrance industries.

The citronella business plays an important role in the community’s economy due to the large absorption of labor needed for the cultivation and marketing of citronella, the large number of supporting industries involved, the use of local raw materials, high product quality, controlled production technology, the development of citronella will indirectly have a positive impact on neighboring villages in the development of citronella.

In Sukabumi Regency, there are several citronella farm companies and their processing unit. But our company today is the largest and the widest.

The Benefit

Citronella oil can be used as an industrial raw material in both the health and cosmetic fields. Some of the uses of citronella oil are as follows :

  1. Pharmacy and health
  • Citronella oil has an aromatherapy effect due to the content of aromatic ester compounds. To speed up the healing process, psychological factors also influence. Aromatherapy can cause a calming effect so that pain can be reduced. In addition, citronella oil has important substances such as anti-inflammatory and anti-depressant substances.
  1. Cosmetics
  • Citronella oil can become a mixture of industrial processed products so that the effects are getting stronger. It is Usually found in perfume, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, lotion and deodorant.
  1. Insect Repellent
  • Citronella oil can also be used to repel insects such as mosquitoes, by rubbing the oil on the skin.

Manufacturing Process of Citronella Oil

In this case, the processing of essential oil is made by distillation. Distillation is the process of separating components in the form of liquids from two or more kinds of mixtures based on differences in their vapor points and this process is carried out on citronella oil which is not soluble in water. The citronella oil processing is explained as follows:

  1. The Fresh citronella leaves are chopped to make it easier to separate the oil components in the citronella leaves
  2. Put the leaves in the Kettle, and fill them with water
  3. Make sure the kettle lightly closed, so that the steam production does not come out.
  4. The stove is turned on to heat the water in the kettle.
  5. Heating from the boiler will produce hot steam.
  6. After cooking for 4-6 hours, the cooked citronella leaves will produce oil mixed with water vapor, which will be distributed to the cooling tube
  7. From the cooling tube is distributed to the separator tube
  8. In a separator, water and oil will separate by themselves according to their density, where the density of water is greater than the density of oil. So, the water will be on the bottom layer and the oil on the top layer.
